Interest Rate Update

2013 proved to be a volatile year for U.S. interest rates, particularly on the long-term end of the yield curve. The yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury bonds dipped as low as 1.66% in May of 2013 before rallying to end the year at 3.04%, the highest level since July 2011. Much of the increase during the year can be attributed to discussion of a decrease in the asset purchases by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) that have been keeping long-term interest rates artificially low.
